We would like to thank our private and corporate donors for their support of our military and veteran students.
During the 2023 - 2024 academic year, OMAVS received over $37,000 from private and corporate donors.
Students may apply for many of these scholarships through MavLink. The Office of Military and Veterans Services also supports students with hardship scholarships on a case by case basis when funds are available.
Robert Swanson Memorial
Robert "Bob" Swanson served in the Navy, 1959-1965. Born in Wausa, a small Nebraska town, Bob served as a machinist on the USS Piedmont, a destroyer tender built during World War II. Bob's plan to obtain his bachelors degree after completing his Navy service did not come to be, life got in the way. Enjoying his role as a devoted father and grandfather, Bob worked his way up through the ranks for 37 1/2 years at Physicians Mutual Insurance Company until he retired as Vice President.
Once retired, Bob devoted his time to any and all ways in support of Veterans and active duty service men and women through numerous endeavors such as:
- Being an integral part of working with legislators to get a law passed in 2006 prohibiting funeral protestors from being within 500 yards of the service, one hour prior and two hours after
- Designing, raising funds and working with state officials to install the "Nebraska Honors Our Troops - Thank You for Your Service" signs at every rest area along I-80 across the state
- Raising over $15,000 for a new flagpole and plaque in Pilger, NE after the town was struck by a tornado and left without a town flag
- Organizing volunteers to ring bells for the Salvation Army at the local Harley dealership for over 12 years
- Facilitating the installation of a POW/MIA seat at Werner Park baseball stadium
- Fundraising to secure funds for the purchase of the 236-acre Omaha National Cemetery
- and much much more
Bob's undying passion for Veterans was summarized in his frequent declaration that "sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance." The intent of the Robert Swanson Memorial Scholarship is that Veterans and active duty military will be honored and remembered for their sacrifices made serving our country.
