Physical Exams
Taking care of your health begins with getting to know your body through regular physical exams. A physical exam may also be referred to as a well-check, annual physical or routine checkup. You should see your primary care provider annually to monitor and maintain your health.
What happens at a physical exam?
- A member of your care team will take your vitals including height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature
- A team member will ask questions about your medical history, medications, allergies, mental health and habits
- Your provider will visually examine your skin, eyes, ears, nose and mouth, and they will also listen to your heart and lungs using a stethoscope
- Your provider will palpate, or use their hands to feel, your lymph nodes and abdomen
- Depending on your age and anatomy, the provider may perform a pelvic exam, a breast exam and a pap smear or a penis and prostate exam
- You may also update your immunizations, if needed
How do I prepare for my exam?
- Be prepared to be open and honest with your provider throughout the exam, so they can provide the best care possible for your needs.
- Bring any questions you might have for your provider
