Omaha – It was a special year for UNO in 2013 with countless events, achievements, special guest visits and national recognitions for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
In 2013 there was no stronger Maverick team than men's baseball, which claimed the first regular season championship for a Maverick team in any Division I sport after being picked to finish last in the conference.
The Mavs earned their title by winning its 19th game of the season, defeating South Dakota State by a score of 6-4. UNO would go on to a 20-6 season in the Summit League and a 27-22 season overall.
The hero of the game was no doubt No. 12, senior Ryan Keele, who scored a walk-off home run at the bottom of the 7th inning with the score all tied at 4-4. The Mavs had already earned a split of the regular season title, but earned it outright with the victory.
Unfortunately, due to NCAA rules during UNO's transition to Division I, the team was not able to compete in the post-season tournament - a situation that will continue through the 2015 regular season.
The team kicks off its 2014 season on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14, by playing in a three-team tournament in Tennessee against Purdue University and the University of Tennessee.
