OMAHA – On Thursday, March 19, two days after the Israeli national elections, Israel‘s Consul General to the Midwest will visit the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) for a special public forum to discuss what the results mean for stability in the Middle East.
The event, which will take place in the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center, Rooms 230 and 231, from noon to 1 p.m., is part of a monthly Middle East Forum series in which UNO faculty experts discuss current events and their impact on international affairs.
For this special forum, Israel Consul General Roey Gilad will join Moshe Gershovich, Ph.D. and director of the Natan and Hannah Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies; Curtis Hutt, Ph.D. and Judaic studies professor for UNO’s Religious Studies program; and Assaf Gavron, an Israeli author and visiting professor for the Schwalb Center.
The panel of experts will be moderated by Patrick McNamara, Ph.D. and visiting professor of international studies.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the forum, which is free. Parking will be available in the Community Engagement Center parking lot, located just north of the Henningson Memorial Campanile.
Gilad assumed the post of Consul General of Israel to the Midwest in 2012. From his base in Chicago, he is responsible for 11 states and he is the highest ranking Israeli official in the Midwest. During his 26 year tenure with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gilad has served in various positions outside of Israel including: Second Secretary in Kenya, Media Counselor in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and head of the Political Affairs Department in the United Kingdom.
The Middle East Forum is a monthly event that occurs three times each semester and is jointly organized by UNO’s Middle East Project Fund and the Schwalb Center. Since its debut in the fall of 2011, the forum has provided students and members of the greater Omaha community the opportunity to dialogue with local experts on current events in the Middle East.
For media requests or questions about the event, please contact Charley Reed, UNO Associate Director of Media Relations, at unonews@unomaha.edu or 402.554.2129.
