Flags across the UNO campus will be lowered through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 by order of Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert and Gov. Pete Ricketts.
On Thursday, May 21, Mayor Stothert ordered all flags in the city to be lowered to half staff until dusk on Monday, May 25, following the death of Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco, who died in the line of duty on Wednesday, May 20.
Throughout the city, the Heartland of America Fountain and the lights on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge will be blue at night through Memorial Day in honor of Officer Orozco.
In a statement released Thursday, Mayor Stothert said lowering the flag, “is an appropriate sign of respect for Officer Orozco and her service to our city.”
UPDATE: On Friday, May 22, Gov. Ricketts ordered flags across the state to be lowered through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, in honor of Orozco as well as Capt. Dustin Lukasiewicz, an marine pilot and UNO student, who lost his life during a first aid mission in Nepal.
