The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Department of Geography/Geology's new research tool proves you're never too old to play in the sand.
The Augmented Reality Sandbox tracks changes in sand, simultaneously projecting a topographic map over it.
Watch a video showing the sandbox in action.
Counselors at the Aim for the Stars Summer Science and Math Camp used the sandbox to introduce campers to the idea of contour maps. Software upgrades will allow UNO students to use the box at a higher level this fall, modeling water movement and landscape evolution.
Look for an in-depth report on the sandbox in the fall edition of the UNO Magazine.
