OMAHA –
A University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) administrator is set to make an impact in sharing the stories of the nation's Latino communities as part of a new role with a national nonprofit media group.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Theresa Barron-McKeagney, UNO’s Associate Dean for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, was officially appointed to the board of directors for the Futuro Media Group.
Founded by journalist Maria Hinojosa, the nonprofit media organization shares the stories of overlooked and underrepresented communities through two programs: "Latino USA" (NPR) & "America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa" (PBS).
Hinojosa visited UNO last year to speak about her career and the many people she's met while giving a voice to a group that is largely voiceless.
Her visit also led to a multi-part series on immigration in Nebraska.
Barron-McKeagney, a UNO alumna, is no stranger to storytelling. She recently published a book chronicling the life of Alberto “Beto” Gonzales, an Omaha community leader who overcame a life of violence, poverty and addiction. Her qualitative dissertation focused on the lives of Midwestern Latinas.
“I am very humbled that Futuro Media Group believes that I can contribute to this outstanding organization,” Barron-McKeagney said.
She will travel to New York City in October, to discuss her role with the organization.
