OMAHA –
As the nation’s top four-year institution for veterans, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is proud to host several competitions during the upcoming National Veterans Golden Age Games.
The games are being held across Omaha, Aug. 8 – 12. The competition arrives on the UNO campus Monday, Aug. 10.
Veterans, age 55 and up, will use UNO’s Olympic size pool, located in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) building, for competitive swimming and also face off in singles and doubles badminton.
“We’re thrilled to welcome such a positive event to our campus,” said Mike Connolly, director of UNO’s Office of Military and Veteran Services.
“Our office focuses on supporting students’ academic achievement, but also their overall wellness,” he said. “It’s inspiring that these competitors are excelling physically and mentally, decades after they served.”
The VA says they still have roughly 2,000 volunteer spots to fill ahead of the competition.
Responsibilities range from helping with luggage at the airport, to assisting at opening ceremonies.
Volunteers are asked to sign up in advance by clicking here. However, the VA will take volunteers up to the day of each event.
The public is invited to watch the games while they are in Omaha. Opening ceremonies will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the CenturyLink Arena.
Competitions at UNO begin at 8 a.m.
