OMAHA – Military and veteran students who want to earn a graduate degree in business should look no further than Omaha.
For the second year in a row, Military Times has ranked the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Business Administration (CBA) as the nation’s best business school for military and veteran students seeking education beyond a bachelor’s degree.
UNO’s CBA stood out in a number of areas, including a 92 percent military retention rate and four-star rankings for staff and academic support.
The business school ranking follows the November release of Military Times’ overall 2016 rankings, which listed UNO as the nation’s best four-year university for military and veteran students for the second consecutive year.
UNO and CBA’s history of providing education to veterans dates back to the nationwide Bootstrapper program, which provided tuition support for veterans following World War II.
Today, UNO’s CBA and Office of Military and Veteran Services work closely together to offer tailored services and resources to all military-affiliated students, supporting them from their transition into the classroom through their transition into the workforce.
Lynn Harland, associate dean of the UNO College of Business Administration, told Military Times that a number of CBA employees have gone through training to better understand the needs of military and veteran students.
“They understand the unique challenges for students coming from the military,” she said. “Our school really benefits from having military students in the classroom — they are leaders in the classroom, extremely professional, and they are exceptional students.”
Military friendliness is also apparent in CBA’s Nebraska Business Development Center, a collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration that offers business planning and market research.
In 2015, the Center worked with more than 200 clients that were either veteran-owned companies or had contacts who were veterans. In the same year, the Center offered training to roughly 150 veterans.
The University of Nebraska’s USSTRATCOM Strategic Leadership Fellows Program is also housed in UNO’s Mammel Hall, home to CBA. Now in its third year, the program trains USSTRATCOM civilian security specialists in areas such a team building, collaboration management, data‐driven decision making and project management. As part of the program, fellows learn directly from top local business executives.
Veterans are also leading the way in groundbreaking research happening at UNO. Over the last two years, student veterans have drawn on their valuable experience, working with Fellows Program coordinators Gina Ligon, Associate Professor of Marketing and Management, and Doug Derrick, Associate Professor of IT Innovation, on national security research projects.
This academic year, more than 1,500 military-affiliated students are enrolled at UNO, representing roughly 10 percent of UNO’s student body. After graduation, they will join the thousands of UNO alumni who also served in the armed forces.
Prominent military alumni include former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Four-Star General James Mullins, Four-Star General Johnnie Wilson, Four-Star General Bryce Poe II and Tuskegee Airman James Warren.
