Omaha Film Critic, Opera Workshop Featured at Next Masters and Music Event
'Tis the season of Oscars, and what better way to celebrate than by spending a star-filled evening on the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) campus bringing the stage and screen to life?
On Sunday, Feb. 21, join Bob Fischbach, retired film and theater critic for the Omaha World Herald, and Shelby VanNordstrand, Ph.D, director of UNO’s Opera Workshop (OpShop), at 5 p.m., at the UNO Art Gallery as the two cap off this Masters and Music season with “Reviews, Reviews!”
The UNO Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on UNO’s Dodge Campus. Admission is $20 for the public and free for UNO students with their MavCard.
Fischbach will be on hand to share insights into critical reviewing and, no doubt, some Oscar speculation. VanNordstrand, who is also an assistant professor of voice, will direct an ensemble of twenty OpShop students in a performance of music from well-known operas and musical theater. Through OpShop, students develop performance skills for the musical theater stage.
After the program, guest artists and visitors are welcome to share in a complimentary wine and hors d’ouevre reception hosted by Friends of Art, an organization that provides assistance for students in UNO’s School of Art and Art History.
Now in its 20th year, the Masters and Music Series consists of three programs throughout the year that blend artistic and musical insights presented by artists and musicians on Sunday evenings in the UNO Art Gallery. The hour-long program gives the audience a chance to meet artists, learn about their process and get to know them on a deeper level.
Friends of Arts Members receive discounted season tickets at just $45 for all three programs. Membership information is available at http://foaomaha.org/ or at Friends of Art, (UNO) on Facebook.
Proceeds from memberships and the Masters and Music series benefit UNO Art and Art History students through scholarships and activities funding. In 2015, proceeds funded four scholarships and two grants.
