Timely Warning Bulletin

UNO Department of Public Safety (DPS) has determined that circumstances exist that may pose a threat to members and guests of the University campus community due to recent thefts nearby campus. Please read this notification and take any necessary precautions to avoid being a potential victim. Feel free to call UNO DPS with any questions or concerns.

Location(s): Parking lots along Elmwood Park Road, Elmwood Park
Date/Time of Occurrence(s): 8/23/2016 - 8/25/2016
Description of Suspect(s): Unknown at this time
Incident Summary:
On 8/23/2016, at approximately 7:30 p.m., four vehicles parked in the lots along Elmwood Park Road were found to have their windows broken out and several items stolen from inside. Again, on 8/25/2016, one more vehicle was found to have their window broken in the same manner with items stolen from inside.
Safety Tips:
- Thefts from vehicles can happen anytime, day or night. Park in well lit, heavily traveled areas.
- Close and lock all windows and doors when you exit.
- Never leave valuables in plain sight. (Coins, charging cords, or other small items can be enough to invite the thief).

The UNO Department of Public Safety website has a wide variety of services that can be used by any student, faculty, staff, or community member at any time. These include:
24/7 Patrols – UNO buildings are patrolled 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Personal Safety Checks – Individuals who work alone late at night or outside standard business hours are able to contact Public Safety to request an officer to periodically check in while you are working.
Personal Escorts – Officers are available to escort individuals to/from campus buildings 24 hours a day.
Personal Emergency Messages – Should your family need to contact you in case of an emergency while you are on campus, they can contact Public Safety at 402.554.2648 to deliver a message.
Members of the UNO community can also contribute to the general safety on our campus by reviewing some basic safety tips:
- In all activities, use common sense and be conscious of your surroundings. Don't ignore hazardous situations.
- Explore campus maps to become familiar with the UNO campus and neighboring areas.
- Always keep your vehicle locked and the windows up, when the car is parked and when you are driving. Have your key in hand when approaching your car.
- Report suspicious and unusual activity to Public Safety. Call our emergency number at 402.554.2911 or report anonymously using U-Tip.
- Make yourself aware of the Blue Light Emergency Phone locations. Use these phones to report emergencies or to contact Public Safety for assistance.
- Add UNO Public Safety to your phone’s contact list 402.554.2911. You can use this number to report emergencies. Public Safety is available 24 hours a day.-
- Use the buddy system and look out for your neighbor. Avoid traveling alone at night around campus or nearby locations.
