OMAHA – The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Department of Theatre will continue its 2016-17 season with the epic story “A War of Roses (Part One): Foreign Flames,” based on the same historical events that inspired the hit book series and television show “Game of Thrones.”
This will be a new adaptation of several of Shakespeare’s historical sagas and a unique collaboration between three vital arts organizations: UNO Theatre, Creighton University and Nebraska Shakespeare.
D. Scott Glasser, professor of Theatre at UNO, is directing the production. A preview performance of “Foreign Flames” is set for Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The show will run Nov. 3 - 5 and 10 at 7:30 p.m, and Nov. 6, 12 - 13 at 2 p.m.
The Nov. 2 preview will also be a TAG Night Out.
Creighton University will present the sequel, “A War of Roses (Part Two): A Fire Within,” directed by Amy Lane, Ph.D., assistant professor of Theatre at Creighton. A preview performance is set for Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The show will run Nov. 11 - 13 and 17 – 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Both productions form a dynamic contemporary telling of the War of the Roses. Culled from Shakespeare’s epic history cycle, these productions chronicle the war with France and the smoldering battle between the English houses of Lancaster and York for the crown of England.
Vincent Carlson-Brown, the artistic director of Nebraska Shakespeare, has spent several years putting this adaptation together.
“After such a long time of planning, writing, rewriting, casting, production meetings, rewriting, more casting, we are finally in rehearsals, which is pretty amazing,” Carlson-Brown said. “I've seen the plays so clearly in my mind for so long. To have it realized with so many people working excitedly towards its success is remarkable. There is still a lot of work to be done but to have gotten this far, through all of the natural challenges a project of this scope encounters, is remarkable.”
