University of Nebraska at Omaha Executive MBA candidate Hallie Hanlon-Ward won a $1,000 scholarship during the Genius of Warren Buffett course by choosing Waste Management (NYSE: WM) as a potential Berkshire addition.
Hanlon-Ward won the GOB Investment Challenge in which seven contestants pitched a variety of stocks covering diverse industries and services that met the acquisition criteria to be a part of the Berkshire Hathaway family of businesses. Judges included GOB alumni, other independent EMBA candidates, lifelong learners, and UNO professor Steven Schultz.
“The Investment Challenge aspect of the course has moved beyond theory to hold real-world implications,” said Bob Miles, course instructor and UNO Executive in Residence.
Last year’s winner, Amerco (NYSE: UHAL) owner of Uhaul, was recently featured in Barron’s Magazine as a company with all of the characteristics to be a Berkshire company.
In 2012, executives in the Genius of Warren Buffett elective course at UNO, selected John Deere (NYSE:DE), which is now included in the Berkshire common stock portfolio.
Beginning in 2013, a GOB Investment Fund was created to invest in stocks recommended by the graduate students who take the course. Donations are accepted and held by the Nebraska University Foundation. The student-directed portfolios from each class are held for 10 years. Ten percent will be sold each year and distributed back to the unrestricted use by the UNO Executive MBA program. After three years, the fund exceeds $55,000.
