The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Art Gallery will open 2017 with an exhibition of works by the American modern artist and illustrator, Milton Wolsky.
The exhibition, titled “Milton Wolsky: Illustrating a Modern Omaha Artist,” opens with a reception for the public on Friday, January 13, 2017 and runs through Thursday, February 9, 2017.
Wolsky (1916-1981) was born in Omaha and graduated from the University of Omaha where he studied Depression-era portraiture and fine art painting.
A U.S. Army veteran, Wolsky’s art training played a special role in depicting the rebuilding of Japan for the United States government.
After finishing his tour with the Army, Wolsky lived in New York where he was an illustrator for LIFE, Time, The American Weekly and Esquire. He returned to Omaha in 1954 and continued his illustrating career while focusing on his love of painting.
Associate art and art history professor Amy Morris and her curatorial seminar students are organizing the exhibit in collaboration with Omaha gallery owners Norma Hilt (ARTicles) and Patrick Drickey (Gallery 1516). The Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, Nebraska, has also loaned work for the exhibition.
The gallery will also host two panel discussions. On Thursday, January, 19, at 7 p.m. UNO art history student-curators will talk about their research and work in designing the show. And on Thursday, February 2, at 7 p.m. UNO graphic design students who created a catalog to accompany the exhibition will talk about their research and work. Those events are free and open to the public.
The UNO Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building on UNO’s Dodge Street Campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, excluding national holidays and university breaks.
Due to the limited hours, appointments for individuals and groups are encouraged as needed. Please don't hesitate to call ahead to schedule a time. These events are free and open to the public and the gallery is accessible to people with disabilities. For questions or to schedule appointment, contact 402.554.2796, unoartgallery@unomaha.edu.
