On Friday, Feb. 3, University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds presented his fourth and final open forum on the budget planning process, due to the state’s decreased revenue projections and the likelihood that state agencies will have their appropriations reduced in the current fiscal year and in the next biennium.
More than 380 faculty, staff, students and community members packed the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom while nearly 200 more watched live online. Bounds presented his budget presentation for nearly an hour while also taking questions from the audience.
Bounds announced last month the creation of a Budget Response Team that will identify strategies for meaningful reductions in 10 areas of university operations: IT, facilities, financial operations, human resources, communications, procurement, printing and copying, energy, digital education and travel.
Each area is represented by a task force of subject-matter experts who will deliver cost-cutting recommendations to a university-wide Steering Committee this spring. The Steering Committee in turn will bring final recommendations to President Bounds and the chancellors for consideration.
