OLLAS Names New Director
OMAHA – The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska Omaha is proud to announce the appointment of its new director, Dr. Cristián Doña-Reveco. Dr. Doña-Reveco has also been named associate professor for the Sociology/Anthropology Department.
Doña-Reveco holds a Ph.D.in Sociology and History from Michigan State University. He is a faculty member in the Escuela de Sociología at Universidad Alberto Hurtado and in the Escuela de Sociología at Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) in Santiago, Chile. He is the director of UDP’s Observatorio de Desigualdades (Observatory of Social Inequalities). In addition, he is adjunct researcher at the Centre for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies.
Doña-Reveco’s research interests lie in international migration within the Americas in a comparative-historical perspective. His dissertation, entitled In the Shadow of Empire and Nation: Chilean Migration to the US since the 1950s, analyzed the historical and biographical components of the decision to migrate. His current lines of research deal with migration decisions, the relations between the state and its migrants, and migrants access to rights in receiving societies. Doña-Reveco will assume his post on August 14.
“I am honored to have been chosen as director of OLLAS,” he said. “OLLAS has a wonderful history in providing advocacy for Latinos and Latin Americans in Nebraska, as well as in providing up-to-date research that can influence policy-making. I am looking forward to working with the communities, faculty, and students in the process of internationalizing OLLAS, while keeping it firmly in Omaha.”
Established in 2003, with the support of UNO faculty, staff, and students as well as the metropolitan community, OLLAS contributes rigorous research, as well as helps fill a void in the institutional infrastructure, dedicated to the understanding and incorporation of the Latino/Latin American population within and across borders.
