Chancellor Gold
- Hello. I'm Jeff Gold. Welcome to this segment of Maverick Minute. I'm so pleased today to be joined by Dr. Dan Shipp, and of course, you know Dan is our Vice Chancellor for Student Success. Dan, thanks so much for being with us today.
Dr. Shipp
- It's a pleasure to be here.
Chancellor Gold
- We're talking from this brand new location at Maverick Landing. Maybe you could tell our audience a little bit about what the purpose of this new location is.
Dr. Shipp
- This is really exciting for us. Many people on campus will know our visit center to be the old beautiful house, the Hayden House, on campus. This is transformed, as of this Monday, where we opened-up our new welcome center right here on Scott Campus, and we have a Maverick Landing, which is set up right now to welcome our large groups that visit us in buses, to small families that will visit us from western Nebraska, Connecticut, in fact, we have a group in from California today.
Chancellor Gold
- Wow, great.
Dr. Shipp
- Yeah.
Chancellor Gold
- How long did it take to plan this space and ultimately put it together and make it so beautiful?
Dr. Shipp
- You hope that you get the feeling of being a Maverick when you come here, so it's taken us the last two and a half years to work with our partners in development, Scott Residential Properties and Tetrad Management. As we've built our new Scott Crossing facility, we reserved this little slice right here on the corner of 67th and Pine Street, so that families and parents know that this is their spot when they're looking to become Mavericks. It's taken us two and a half years to plan this great space.
Chancellor Gold
- This is what many universities would call a welcome center, I guess?
Dr. Shipp
- Yeah.
Chancellor Gold
- Not just for families and for future students, but I understand that we have other services here as well for our students?
Dr. Shipp
- Yeah, really important. This is where your adventure begins with us. As you are greeted, as we came in today, we have a student ambassador that talks to you about what it means to be a Maverick and how excited we are to see you, but then we have a launch pad space that's really unique, where you'll see a video that will welcome you that will also inform you about all of the academic programs and services that we provide on campus. Think of it as coming to Disney World.
Chancellor Gold
- Yeah.
Dr. Shipp
- This is your very first start on the trip.
Chancellor Gold
- Super. This really sets the stage for what the Maverick culture is all about?
Dr. Shipp
- Absolutely is, and you know the other piece that you ask is what other services are here? We have an academic and career placement center here that works specifically with our employer partners in the Omaha metro area that will pair up students with internships, future career opportunities, and our office is located right here.
Chancellor Gold
- I know that those have been incredibly successful programs for all of our colleges to get students internships and experiential learning in this community because it not only gives them great learning experience, but ultimately, an opportunity for jobs, is that not right?
Dr. Shipp
- Absolutely, and we really see that as our great advantage within the region, is that our employer partners are here waiting for our students to start as interns and then ultimately end up in careers.
Chancellor Gold
- I know speaking with a lot of the employers of our students, that they're really excited that we make these services available. Congratulations on a beautiful new facility. We look forward to the opening events. Thanks so much for being with us today.
Dr. Shipp
- A pleasure.
Chancellor Gold
- And thank you so much for being with us today on this segment of Maverick Minute.
