Chancellor Gold:
Hi, I'm Jeff Gold and welcome to another Maverick Minute. I have the pleasure and honor today of being joined by Mr. Joe Kaminski, and as of course we all know, Joe is our Wellness Coordinator and Director of Campus Recreation. And I'm speaking to you today from the HPER Center, on the first day back after New Years. Joe, you know, I wonder if you'd spend a few minutes with us today talking about this new program and why so many people after New Year's make a commitment to get fit, and for one reason or another, never really get it done.
Joe Kaminski:
Well, thanks, first of all thanks for inviting me to join us today and the, I believe the New Year's, New Year's resolutions individuals are excited about having a new start, and unfortunately, they're not very good at following through.
Chancellor Gold:
Sure.
Joe Kaminski:
On their, their goals, so our commitment.
Chancellor Gold:
You have a solution for that, right?
Joe Kaminski:
Well, we do have a solution for that, we like to think we have a solution for that, and it's called our Commit to Fit program. It came about in 2014 and it is an effort to help people get started and stay with their goals, and not just necessarily related to fitness. There's also wellness goals that we're encouraging people to...
Chancellor Gold:
Well, very important is we have not only a campus fitness program, but a major commitment to campus wellness as well, so what makes this program different? You know, I've made and broken countless New Year's resolutions over the years, so why is this different?
Joe Kaminski:
Well, it's an opportunity, we meet people where they gather in the first place, so we set up a table here in the H&K building, we're going to be down on Scott Campus as well, and we're asking people to write down their goals as well as, and then we will follow up with them to see if they're making progress on those goals, so we're helping them along. We're not just having them write them and then leaving them alone, hope that they end up reaching their goals.
Chancellor Gold:
So accountability, that may be part of the secret sauce, is that what you're suggesting?
Joe Kaminski:
Yes, that is correct, that is part of the secret sauce.
Chancellor Gold:
Oh, I think you're exactly right. So, let me ask you this. If we have members of the Maverick Community that want more information or perhaps want to commit to be fit, how would they get more information? How would they reach out?
Joe Kaminski:
Well they can certainly contact myself, Skyler Brooke is another individual who really oversees this program and he has, he can make a good connection, as well as anybody on our campus recreation staff. Visit our website at the wellness, and you'll certainly be able to get enough information.
Chancellor Gold:
Super, and is there a specific time period that somebody has to reach out in, or can they do it any time?
Joe Kaminski:
Well, the program, the Commit to Fit program will start January 8th, and the sign-up period will run through January 12th, and again we'll be on the Dodge Street campus here in the building, and also over in the student center, as well as Mammel Hall and Maverick Landing on the Scott Campus. But if folks can't find the time to make a connection during that first week, we're certainly happy to meet with somebody afterwards as well.
Chancellor Gold:
Thanks so much for being with us today.
Joe Kaminski:
You're welcome.
Chancellor Gold:
And thank you for being with us today on this segment of Maverick Minute.
