UNO Theatre is gearing up for an exciting 2018-2019 MainStage season. Every production will highlight and celebrate the extraordinary work of female playwrights. UNO Theatre will also roll out a new partnership series entitled Connections.
With having a female playwright-driven season, UNO Theatre hopes to celebrate a few of the many talented playwrights whose work has been overlooked in the past. The faculty and staff are very pleased to finally bring this initiative to light, after Dr. Cindy Melby Phaneuf helped the initiative last year through the National Theatre Conference’s Women Playwrights Initiative.
Cindy stated, “UNO is proud to join a national movement with a goal of producing more plays by women. Our exciting season of all female playwrights helps change the current national average of only 1 in 4 plays produced written by female playwrights, towards a more equitable balance.”
Slated to begin in Feb. 2019, Connections is a theatrical performance series dedicated to fostering, inspiring and producing creative partnerships/collaborations between UNO Theatre and our greater local, regional and national artistic communities. Connections is inspired by Valerie St. Pierre Smith’s experience while a Design Wing Fellow with Great Plains Theatre Conference. Each year UNO Theatre will dedicate one show as a collaboration with different creative organizations from across the nation, and this inaugural series will begin with GPTC.
UNO Theatre hopes to continue establishing these new relationships in the future to provide new perspectives for the students, faculty, and community at large.
