Legislative candidate Megan Hunt, running for the District 8 seat in the Nebraska Legislature, recently toured the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
During her time on campus, Hunt visited the Nebraska Business Development Center within UNO's Mammel Hall, as well as the Peter Kiewit Institute, home to the UNO's College of Information Science & Technology.
As the mother of a young daughter, Hunt was encouraged to hear about the work UNO is doing to engage young women and people of color throughout the Omaha area in STEM fields.
"We have to engage people in marginalized populations with this technology, and knowing that UNO is at the forefront of building those opportunities for future generations is very encouraging."
She continued, "For Nebraska to be a player in innovation and technology growth in our nation, which we can and should be, we have to take our place as leaders in STEM education."
Hunt had the opportunity to visit the Center for Collaboration Science’s Human-Machine Collaboration Lab, where she learned how technology is being used to study how to help humans collaborate more effectively and to test how people perceive, collaborate with, and react to artificially intelligent machines.
"I am really passionate about issues of talent attraction and retention in Nebraska, and as a young person running for office here, I know that our university system is the foundation of what keeps young people interested in living in Nebraska."
Hunt's opponent in the Legislative District 8 race will take part in a campus visit on August 30.
