The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) flag will be lowered on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 in memory of UNO student John Patrick Nicholson.
Nicholson passed away on Sept. 9, 2018 after a seven-year struggle with brain cancer. He was 22 years old at the time of his passing.
While at UNO, John Patrick was a Regent’s Scholar and member of the UNO Honor’s Program majoring in IT Innovations. In May, 2018, he served as a student marshal for the College of Information Science and Technology at UNO’s commencement ceremony. Before and after the ceremony, John Patrick's story was shared across campus and throughout Omaha community. He was also a vital community member of the Saint John Paul II Newman Center, a residence hall and resource center for Catholic students in the Omaha area.
John Patrick is survived by his parents, Charles and Catherine, of Bellevue; his brother William, of Austin, TX; his sister Sarah Webster, brother-in-law Benjamin Webster and nephew Charlie, of Omaha, as well his brother David at home. He also leaves his maternal grandparents, Thane and Sally Baker of Bellevue, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Gifts in memory of John Patrick can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Peter Catholic Church, or to the University of Nebraska Foundation for the College of Information Science and Technology.
Our thoughts and condolences are with John Patrick’s loved ones during this difficult time.
