Legislative candidate Scott Winkler, running for the District 18 seat in the Nebraska Legislature, recently toured the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
While on campus, Winkler visited the Community Engagement Center (CEC) where he had the opportunity to speak with Steve Rodie, professor of Biology, to discuss one of Mr. Winkler's issue areas of sustainability. Winkler was also shown the CEC’s recently planted rain garden and discussed with Rodie UNO’s efforts to create a more sustainable campus.
Winkler also met with Catherine Lang, State Director for the Nebraska Business Development Center, to talk about UNO's support of small businesses and ways to improve the state's economy.
“Higher education is going to be a priority for me as a legislator.” said Winkler, “I think that’s the best resource we can tap into to drive the economic development of our state; and then working to keep more of our graduates here in Nebraska to increase the economic impact.”
Winkler went on to explain the role the university’s budget plays in the state’s economic development. Pointing out how crucial it is to properly fund the educational sector so it can return the favor to the state’s economy.
“The university deserves the kind of attention and focus that is going to produce the best output it can, both in terms of its students, but also with research and putting its best foot forward in promoting the state.”
Mr. Winkler's opponent in the legislative race visited UNO earlier this summer.
