International students at the University of Nebraska are being encouraged to review updated requirements for waiving coverage under the university’s student health insurance plan.
International students with “F” or “J” visas enrolled at any University of Nebraska campus - including the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) are required to have health insurance. These students are automatically enrolled and billed for the university’s student health plan, provided by UnitedHealthcare StudentResources. Students must accept or waive coverage each [semester].
For 2019-20, the criteria for waiving coverage has been updated to be more in line with other institutions across the country and ensure that international students have quality coverage when healthcare needs arise.
F1 international students who are auto-enrolled may waive participation in the university’s student health insurance plan if they can show that they have health insurance coverage under one of the following options:
-
A government-sponsored or guaranteed program such as those provided by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM), the Emabssy of Oman, Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
-
A U.S.-based employer group health insurance plan that compiles with all Affordable Care Act requirements.
J1 international students who are auto-enrolled may waive participation if they can show that they have health coverage under an International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) plan, or an International Student Insurance (“Select” or “Elite” level) plan.
Plans such as the NYIS plan underwritten by Student Resources (SPC) Ltd no longer meet the new criteria and will not be considered waiver-eligible plans. Any other form of health insurance that does not meet the above criteria will not be accepted and will not qualify for a waiver.
The deadline to waive participation in the university’s student health insurance plan is September 9, 2019. Details regarding the wiaver process will be sent to your university email account starting July 18, 2019.
