Information Technology Services (ITS) is beginning initial deployment of a new phone service on the UNO campus, with full deployment expected by June 2020.
This project will replace the university’s existing Avaya telephone system with a new Cisco Unified Communications system, which encompasses telephone, instant messaging and presence services.
The new Cisco Unified Communications system will provide several new features:
-
New telephone options
-
Integration between UNK, UNL and UNO, including a combined directory and toll-free calling between campuses.
-
Mobility features such as the ability to have incoming calls simultaneously ring a desktop and cell phone, or to transfer in-progress calls to a cell phone.
-
An application for your cell phone/computer that can be used to make or receive calls from your desktop number. The application can be used in addition to a physical phone or as a physical phone replacement.
-
Self-Service feature to manage your desk phone and call forwarding.
In addition to these new features, the Cisco solution will save departments an average of $4 per user per month.
We are developing a schedule for deployment by department that is sensitive to unique needs. This roll out schedule will be on ITS' UNO Telecom website. ITS will work with each department to make sure their needs are met, ensure essential resources are available, provide training on the new system and deploy new phones.
ITS will continue to provide updates about the transition, and we look forward to working with departments across campus to ensure a successful transition in the coming months. For more information, visit the UNO ITS website.
