August started off with a road trip to Wisconsin for the UNO Dance Team (UNODT). Each summer the team travels to camp to learn material for game day performances, work on technique, and compete for the first time with the new squad. This was their first year heading to this particular camp in Wisconsin Dells and the experience was like none other.
Teams from across the country attend this camp, including some of the most successful competitive programs in the country, like the University of Minnesota and The Ohio State University. Coach Mo Marmesh said, “It’s really exciting to see how much the UNO program has grown. To watch our team dance next to some of the most elite programs in the country, and holding their own, is really exciting.”
UNODT also brought a home routine to camp. A home routine is an opportunity to compete with the new team and get feedback from a judging panel early in this season. This year’s home routine was choreographed by veteran team members, Brianna Ostronic, Cassidy Sarver, Emily Stephenson, and Coach Mo. The home routine competition was live streamed through Varsity TV and is a unique way for the program to gain more national exposure.
UNODT took 1st Place in Division I Home Routine, brought home all blue ribbons for their individual evaluations, a collective Superior Rating for their individual evaluations, Superior Game Day Performance, and a Collegiate Recognition award. Senior team member and group leader, Brea Bradley said, “Camp was a really great experience. We learned so much about ways to continue the growth of our program and had an amazing time bonding with each other in the process.”
They also had a super fan in the crowd at camp this year! Durango went to camp with them and participated in mascot clinics, community events, and the always entertaining mascot follies at the end of camp.
UNODT will spend the rest of their summer learning their competition routines, perfecting sidelines for games, and rehearsing material for game day events. You can also see them at several of the Durango Days events!
