The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has once again been nationally recognized as a top destination for military-affiliated students and their families.
Military Times ranked UNO third nationally among four-year institutions on its Best for Vets: Colleges 2020 rankings. UNO has been consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally since 2012.
“Military-affiliated students choose UNO for its access to exceptional education and resources as well as its history of military-inclusivity,” said Javier Saldana, Co-Interim Director of Retention and Recruitment, Office of Military and Veteran Services. “Our team takes great pride in our dedication to the military community and the number of resources UNO provides to serve active duty, veterans, guard, reservists, and their families in navigating their education benefits as well as their academics.”
UNO’s commitment to serving its military students is reflected by the number of military students who call UNO home. More than 1,700 military-affiliated students are currently enrolled at UNO.
“What sets UNO apart is our culture of care and our continuous drive to help student veterans bridge separation from the military to civilian employment,” said Kirsten Omoto, Co-Interim Director, Student Experience and Success. "We are grateful for our UNO and community partners that help to provide additional supports to our military-affiliated students."
The rankings are based on scores in five categories: University culture, academic outcomes/quality, student support, academic policies, and cost and financial aid.
Each college considered for the rankings also provided answers to about 150 questions regarding operations involving military and student veterans and their families. These questions touched on various aspects of support for military-connected students, including veteran spaces, policy agreements, GI Bill gap coverage, accreditation, graduation and retention rates, and more.
Scores are determined based on survey responses, what veterans consider important in higher education, and data from sources within the U.S. Veterans Affairs and Education Departments.
UNO’s commitment to supporting military students and their families dates back decades. In the 1940s, UNO participated in the Operation Bootstrap Initiative which assisted commissioned officers in completing a degree in post-military life. This commitment to serving military-affiliated students continues today as Military Times has ranked UNO in the top ten nationally in its Best for Vets: Colleges rankings each year for the past eight years.
