UNO Academic Advising Council Names Michael Gutierrez-Madrigal Advisor of the Month

Michael Gutierrez-Madrigal, Pre-Health Recruiter and Advisor for the Health Careers Resource Center (HCRC) was recently named the “Advisor of the Month” by the Academic Advising Council (AAC) for the month of April.

The award was presented to Michael at the April Academic Advising Council meeting.

Michael was nominated by two of his peers. His first nominator said, “Mike has been an awesome addition to the HCRC ever since he was hired back in August 2020. He has more than doubled the HCRC’s student recruitment numbers when it comes to Urban Health Opportunities Program (UHOP) applicants and prospective student visits. He works expertly with the Office of Admissions, New Student and Family Programs, and athletics to recruit students interested in Health Professions to UNO. Whenever he advises a student, he takes the time to listen to their concerns, comes up with the best academic plan for their circumstance, and has increased representation of Latinx students seen in the HCRC.”

His second nominator said, “He goes above and beyond to ensure their needs are met. Mike has been in the HCRC for about a year and a half but students call and ask for him by name. He builds relationships with our pre-health students and they truly love him. In addition to being an amazing advisor, he is also a recruiter for the HCRC and starts building a relationship with prospective students before they even attend UNO.”

For being selected as the AAC Advisor of the Month, Michael will receive a certificate and gift card.

Nominate an Advisor for the "Advisor of the Month Award"

If you know one of your colleagues has gone above and beyond in their exceptional service to students, their colleagues and/or the university, nominate them for the Advisor of the Month Award! Each month, one advisor will be selected at random from the nominations to receive the award at the Academic Advising Council meeting. All nominees will be recognized by AAC for their work.Nominees must be at least .5 FTE whose primary role is academic advising. Once selected, advisors would not be eligible to receive the award again for one calendar year, although they can still be nominated in recognition of their work.
