The University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is excited to announce that the university has been awarded the 2019 Tree Campus USA® recognition. This is the 10th year in a row that UNO has been honored with this recognition.
Tree Campus USA is an Arbor Day Foundation program that honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.
To receive this distinction, UNO had to meet the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry that is required by Tree Campus USA:
- Established tree advisory committee
- Evidence of a campus tree-care plan
- Dedicated annual expenditures for the campus tree program
- An Arbor Day observance
- Sponsorship of student service-learning projects
Kristina Hughes, UNO Sustainability Coordinator, is proud of the consistent recognition of the UNO campus.
“Our Tree Campus USA designation recognizes UNO’s commitment to environmental wellness as well as the emotional and spiritual wellness of our campus community.” Hughes said, “It is so exciting to celebrate our tenth anniversary of this designation, which actually coincides with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.”
UNO’s Landscape Manager, Lowell Neuhaus, didn’t hesitate to mention the hard work of his team.
“I would like to congratulate the Landscape and Grounds crew for their dedication to the tree plantings on campus. Their dedication is the reason UNO has been, and will continue to be, a Tree Campus USA.”
UNO would like to thank the Office of Sustainability for their dedication to exploring ways to introduce and support sustainability efforts on campus and in the community.
