No matter what life has in store for Asinie Williams, she knows greatness awaits.
The Omaha North High School graduate, who became a certified nursing assistant as a high school student, hopes to combine her entrepreneurial aspirations and her passion for helping others into a career of owning and operating childcare centers. As the latest recipient of the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Maverick in the Making Scholarship, Williams will have the platform she needs to make her vision a reality.
“I’m ready to see what life has for me,” Williams said. “I’m ready to take on challenges, I’m ready to achieve, and just be great.”
Maverick in the Making recognizes high school seniors and recent graduates like Williams who are making positive impacts in their communities by awarding them a scholarship to UNO for $4,000. According to Kamina Lemons, an Omaha North teacher and Williams’ nominator, Williams has all the defining characteristics of a Maverick.
“Asinie is intelligent, she is courageous, she is bold, and I just really believe in her ability to be a Maverick and go all-out her freshman through senior year of college,” Lemons said.
Williams’ mother Rachel Houston said her daughter is a dedicated student, carrying books with her wherever she goes and putting schoolwork before any other activities.
“She really deserves it and I cannot wait to see the woman she becomes and all of the accomplishments she makes.”
