There are several great options available to UNO faculty when it comes to the textbook adoption process.
UNO’s Bookstore, Office of Digital Learning, and Criss Library are teaming up to ensure that UNO faculty know these great options, and their respective impact to students.
The UNO Bookstore offers three great options: the traditional textbook adoption process, eBooks, and First Day Access. eBooks and First Day Access deliver course materials to students digitally, and typically discount the purchase price between 50-80% from the retail price of standard new textbooks. The First Day Access program is unique in that course materials are delivered inside Canvas via a publisher integration, are available the first day of a semester, and are billed directly to a student’s account unless they choose to opt out. The Bookstore’s First Day Access option saved UNO students $1.1M over standard textbooks in 2020.
UNO encourages faculty to consider adopting Open Educational Resources (OER), free or sharply-reduced cost digital course materials integrated into Canvas in lieu of a traditional text. There are many options available for content delivery, including revision, remixing, redistribution, reusing, and retaining. Courses using OER and other affordable content will cost students just $0-$40 for course materials. Criss Library offers assistance to faculty in selecting and identifying quality affordable content for courses. Over the past several years since UNO began our work with OER, these efforts have saved UNO students $420,000.
