An effective onboarding program can improve job satisfaction, lower turnover, and improve engagement and performance levels. The Office of Human Resources will begin a new onboarding program in March of 2023 to begin to realize those effects. UNO DAY 1 will focus on helping new employees feel connected earlier, help them understand their roles faster, and help them embrace the UNO culture more completely.
The new process will begin long before the new hire’s first day with earlier communication from their manager and the HR team. This will lead new hires into a Welcome Session in HR on their first morning, where they’ll receive information about payroll, benefits, and development and have an earlier opportunity to ask questions. They’ll have guidance claiming their IT identities, email addresses and setting up Duo and then receive their MavCARD all before even going to their work area. Managers will receive a comprehensive checklist to help set the tone for success with a departmental onboarding and orientation. New employees will still receive the online orientation and have access to HR for questions and help throughout their first weeks.
To make UNO DAY 1 successful, Human Resources will be changing some procedures and asking for help from hiring managers:
-
All new employees (beginning with March 6, 2023) will begin on Monday mornings at 9 A.M., all together, reporting directly to Human Resources.
-
All I-9’s, powerforms and PAF’s must be completed no later than TEN (10) days prior to the employee start date (For a March 6 start date, I-9 should be completed no later than Feb. 24).
-
All PAF’s will be routed through appropriate channels and to HR no later than seven (7) days prior to the employee start date (Due by Feb. 28 for a March 6 start date).
-
On the employee’s first day, Managers (or a designee) will meet their new hire at MavCARD Services at 10:45 A.M. to escort them to the work area and begin department onboarding.
-
New employees will not be able to start work if their PAF/I-9/Powerforms have not been received and new employees will not be allowed to start on a non-Monday.
HR will process the new hire paperwork so that NUIDs, NetIDs and personnel numbers will be generated and ready prior to the employee’s first day. New hires will receive a packet of information about UNO, including their ID numbers and email address, contact information, payroll schedules and maps.
Human Resources is excited to begin this phase of enhancing onboarding and services for new hires.
An example agenda is as follows:
