On Dec. 18, Google Apps, including Google Drive, will be retired for students. Most of the collaboration and storage needs for students can now be done using Microsoft 365 services.
As part of this transition, University of Nebraska Information Technology Services (NU ITS) can help with a migration of data from Google Drive to OneDrive leading up to Dec. 18. ITS will provide details on this in the coming weeks.
All staff and organization accounts will be retired in spring of 2024, around March 9. We will work on faculty migrations after the Spring 2024 semester ends.
Why the move?
Google changed their pricing model on July 1, 2022, and is now charging all educational customers of our size for its use. This cost is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
The University of Nebraska (NU) System currently has Microsoft 365 which builds on essential file and collaboration services with OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. These tools have existing collaboration and communication capabilities for faculty, staff, and students. Microsoft 365 also includes security services that will enhance protection for university data beyond what Google currently offers.
What do I need to do?
Everyone can help by cleaning up files. Since ITS will be working on a migration of data to Microsoft 365 for all faculty and staff, you don’t have to do anything, however it will help to clean up old files you may not need or want in Microsoft 365. If you would like to export a copy of your data, you can use takeout.google.com.
