At their recent meeting on Oct. 5, 2023, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents presented Huai-Mei Furman with a KUDOS Award for her dedication to supporting UNO’s faculty and staff in their efforts to advise and retain students.
As the Director of Academic Advising and Certification Officer for the UNO College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS), Furman is highly regarded for her leadership skills and poise under pressure.
One of her nominators said that “Huai-Mei is the type of person that is task orientated and leads by calm, steady example. She isn't one to seek accolades but simply serves her unit and the wider UNO community to the best of her abilities. She has shown humility and growth when mistakes are made, gives grace and support to her team, and constantly refines her leadership process."
She has worked at UNO for more than 10 years, consistently fostering the recruitment and retention of UNO students. Her talent for refining, streamlining, and improving processes has led to the creation of innovative methods to track student success and support their journey as Mavericks.
"Huai-Mei worked with Systems Intelligence & Data Analytics to develop a more robust Academic Advising report that units could use to track enrollment, advising holds, specific course enrollment and other essential data," the nominator added. "This report has been critical in retention and outreach efforts."
In her work as the Certification Officer, Furman goes the extra mile for students and teachers as they work to address the region’s teacher shortage.
“Huai-Mei is an expert advocate for undergraduate students and current teachers seeking additional teacher certification. She will work with the Nebraska Department of Education to facilitate the ease of renewals, etc. while maintaining the rules of teacher certification. This often means advocating to NDE about cases and giving evidence of a requirement being satisfied so that talented and high need area teachers can get into classrooms.”
In presenting the Board of Regents KUDOS award to Furman, UNO Student Body President/Regent Hakim Lotoro thanked her for her dedication to the University of Nebraska at Omaha and to the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.
Congratulations, Huai-Mei!
