Several members of the UNO Academic Advising Council's (AAC) Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion Committee (DEAI) were accepted to present at the NACADA 2023 Annual Conference that was held in early October. NACADA is the leading global association for the advancement of student success through excellence in academic advising in higher education.
UNO advisors Nicki Allen, Andrew Beck, Heather Ford, Mike Gutierrez-Madrigal, Lyndsey Rice, and Alexis Sherman (not pictured) presented on the topic “Inclusivity in Word and Action: A Conversation about the Words Advisors Use” to help inform advisors of best practices regarding words and phrases used to create an inclusive advising experience for all students.
The team presented to a full session of over 150 people and received excellent feedback from the session evaluations. One evaluator stated, “This was my absolute favorite session from the NACADA 2023 annual conference. The topic is so relevant to our daily work as advisors and all of the presenters were clearly committed to inclusive advising. I left with knowledge about historical origins of some pejorative terms/phrases that are sadly commonly used today, and I greatly appreciated that the presenters not only shared their own knowledge with the audience but also invited the audience to share with/teach everyone in the room as well.”
The AAC DEAI committee first shared the presentation at the UNO AAC professional development day last spring before being selected to present at the annual conference this fall. In total, UNO staff and faculty presented five sessions at the conference, which was attended by over 3300 advisors from around the world.
