In this Installment, Center for Afghanistan Studies Coordinator of Education and Outreach Programs Hanif Sufizada answers the question: “How are the Taliban Financed?”
About Sufizada
Prior to joining UNO, Sufizada was the Director for Private Sector Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), Kabul Afghanistan. In addition, he was also a senior technical advisor on governance to the Mayor of Kabul. He worked closely with the mayor and his senior staff in developing governance policies, procedures, department terms of references and designing economic development packages for various districts of the city. Healso worked closely with US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the city infrastructure development.
Sufizada has more than seven years of experience working for the United Nations in developing countries, including Liberia, Nepal and Pakistan where his focus was economic and political stability through private sector engagement.
In late 2020 Sufizada contributed a piece to The Conversation about how the Taliban finances its operations. He was a regular contributor to local, state, national, and international news coverage of Afghanistan troop withdrawal.
