This profile is part of the "Commencement Student Stories" series featuring Mavericks graduating in December 2023. Once a Maverick, always a Maverick!
Alex Esparza-Quezada, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, pursued a double major in Chemistry and Secondary Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). His decision to attend UNO was largely influenced by affordability, a practical choice that aligned with his educational aspirations.
During his journey at UNO, Alex actively engaged in the Thompson Learning Community, where his involvement ranged from mentoring to co-teaching. Serving as a peer mentor for freshmen and sophomores, and later assuming the role of lead mentor, provided him with invaluable hands-on experience, significantly shaping his future as an educator.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Esparza-Quezada recalled the challenge of passing a demanding chemistry course. He credited UNO's high academic standards and the influence of James Hagen, Ph.D., his organic chemistry professor, for molding him into a more resilient and dedicated student.
UNO's diverse array of resources, including the Math Science Learning Center, Student Leadership, Involvement, and Inclusion at the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC), and the Writing Center left a lasting impression on Esparza-Quezada. He emphasized the importance of these resources in fostering not only academic growth, but also prioritizing mental and physical well-being during the college experience.
His commitment to teaching led him to secure a position at Omaha Burke High School, initially as a chemistry student teacher and later expanding to teaching biology. His goal to make science accessible and enjoyable for students highlights his dedication to education and inspiring young minds.
Looking ahead, Esparza-Quezada aims to maintain ties with UNO, seeking guidance from former professors and staying involved with advisors from the Thompson Learning Community. He values the impact UNO has had on his academic and personal growth, emphasizing a continued pursuit of learning and giving back to the educational community that shaped his journey.
