This profile is part of the "Commencement Student Stories" series featuring Mavericks graduating in December 2023. Once a Maverick, always a Maverick!
Ann Gentle's journey through her Master of Business Administration program (MBA) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) College of Business Administration (CBA) is a testament to resilience, commitment, and a deep appreciation for learning. As a nontraditional student who returned to academia after establishing a career and raising a family, her path offers inspiration and valuable insights for anyone embarking on an educational adventure later in life.
When asked about her choice to pursue an MBA at UNO, Gentle’s decision was deeply rooted in the ties she had with the institution. Having a history with UNO, from her undergraduate years to hosting international students for nearly two decades, the familiarity and the added partnership between where she works, Union Pacific (UP), and UNO presented a compelling case. The flexibility offered by UP in supporting her educational journey, allowing her to take a variety of classes and providing monetary support, simplified her academic pursuit.
Despite juggling a full-time job and family responsibilities, Gentle found herself deeply engaged in a data literacy class. Her involvement extended beyond the academic realm as she collaborated with Wellbeing Partners, creating impactful Tableau dashboards and presentations, earning her recognition with the Chancellor's Award for Service Learning.
Reflecting on her time at UNO, Gentle highlights the challenges and triumphs during the pandemic-induced shift to virtual learning. She praises the professors of CBA for their adaptability, creating a cohesive and inclusive virtual environment. Their effort showcased the human side of academia, fostering a supportive community during uncertain times.
When offering advice to incoming students, Gentle emphasizes the importance of active engagement, forming connections with professors and peers, and cherishing the educational experience. Having realized the value of intentional learning and relationships later in life, she encourages students to make the most of their academic journey.
