This profile is part of the "Commencement Student Stories" series featuring Mavericks graduating in December 2023. Once a Maverick, always a Maverick!
As Brenda Sanchez looks back on her journey at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), it's evident that her path has been shaped by unwavering support, personal growth, and a deep sense of purpose. This December, she is graduating with a double major in psychology and Latino/Latin American studies, accompanied by a minor in sociology.
Sanchez’s time at UNO was marked by meaningful experiences, despite the initial hurdles posed by starting her education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Joining Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Incorporated provided her with a network of support, fostering connections that extended beyond Greek life and equipped her with tools for future success.
Reflecting on impactful courses and professors, Sanchez recalls the guidance and inspiration provided by educators like Bethany Lyons, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology and Thomas Sanchez, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology and Latino/Latin American Studies. Their mentorship not only shaped her academic journey but also helped her reconnect with her cultural roots, which helped her to build a sense of belonging and understanding within the Latino community in Omaha.
UNO's impact on Sanchez’s personal and professional growth has been profound. It opened her eyes to the disparities faced by minority communities, fueling her aspiration to become a school psychologist and advocate for mental health, especially within the Latino community.
As she looks forward to her post-graduation plans, Sanchez’s sights are set on pursuing graduate school for school psychology. She stated that her time at UNO has equipped her with not just academic knowledge, but also the skills to navigate the real world, preparing her for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Her advice to incoming students echoes the essence of her own journey—embrace opportunities, reach out, and build connections. Sanchez emphasizes the importance of overcoming fears, seeking help from professors, and forging meaningful relationships to succeed in college.
