As Victor Kosmicki Gutierrez's prepares to graduate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha's (UNO) College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS) this December, Kosmicki Gutierrez reflected on the significant milestones that have shaped his academic path.
For Kosmicki Gutierrez, the significance of this achievement goes far beyond personal success. It represents the fulfillment of a generational dream of being the first in his family to graduate college. His educational journey has been deeply influenced by his mother's unwavering support, encouragement, and sacrifices. She instilled in him a love for learning, serving as the guiding force behind his accomplishments.
Throughout his time at UNO, Kosmicki Gutierrez has been an active participant in various extracurricular activities and organizations, embracing the university's community. He served as a Thompson Learning Community Scholar and dedicated two years to mentoring peers. Engaging with STEMSTARS, a non-profit educational organization, allowed him to extend his passion for education to younger children. Additionally, Victor was a dedicated member of Delta Chi fraternity and actively contributed to several committees.
Reflecting on his university experience, Kosmicki Gutierrez cherishes the camaraderie formed within his fraternity, the countless hours spent studying in the library, and memorable moments on the basketball court as an intramural player. He fondly recalls the exhilaration of a buzzer-beater victory against South Dakota, celebrating the triumph with fellow students chanting the university's name.
Post-graduation, Kosmicki Gutierrez plans to embark on a year-long journey as a substitute teacher, aiming to find the ideal school district where he can make a meaningful impact. Additionally, he plans to return to Upward Bound, a program that prepares high school students for higher education, as an instructor over the summer before stepping into his first official teaching role.
When offering advice to incoming students, Victor emphasizes the importance of making connections and building friendships. His personal mantra of making a new friend every day on campus led him to form deep and lasting bonds.
Looking ahead, Victor envisions staying connected to the UNO community, continuing to engage with the campus, and potentially contributing as an alum. His desire to give back is evident in his sister's enrollment at UNO and the possibility of his brother following suit.
