Live and Learn on campus. Explore the city together.
Summer in the City is a 12-week experience for students serving as interns in the Greater Omaha area to live and learn on campus, and explore the city together.
Summer in the City is an opportunity for UNO, Omaha businesses, and the city’s culture to come together in a community-focused, cohort-based experience. Students will develop professional skills while completing coursework and becoming integrated with the city–and each other.
If you have a summer internship, your employer may be interested in financially sponsoring your participation, as the InternNE initiative may subsidize it for them. Employers interested in InternNE should contact Ana Lopez Shalla at alopezshalla@unomaha.edu.
Summer in the City Program Costs
The InternNE program may reimburse employers up to 50 percent of the program costs. These costs may include on-campus housing, tuition, and fees corresponding to their status as in-state, OUR, or out-of-state for 6 hours of summer credits. Current students enrolled at UNO may be eligible for summer financial aid.Important Dates

Course Details
Summer in the City: An Exploration of Omaha (3 credit hours):
UBNS 3200-301 meets weekly from 9 A.M. to 12:20 P.M. on Saturdays
This experiential course explores the urban fabric of Omaha, Nebraska, bringing students to a new location in the city every week. Students will interact with local communities, neighborhoods, festivals and events, institutions, and the urban landscape of businesses, people, historical and cultural sites, and one another. As true participant/observers, we will reflect on how the city functions as an interactive metropolitan environment both supporting and placing demands on its residents and visitors. We will consider Omaha’s current role in Nebraska and the Great Plains, as well as its internal functionality for its many constituents as we envision the futures of interactive urban, metropolitan areas. Current UNO students register for this course through MavLINK.
Intergroup Dialogue (3 credit hours):
CMST 2300-301/302 meets weekly from 11:30 A.M. to 2:50 P.M. on Thursdays
The increasing diversity in the US presents a growing need for communication skills one can apply whenever we work with, learn with, and relate to those with different social identities than our own. This course is designed to provide students with experiences and skills necessary to engage in open and constructive dialogue across social identity groups. The course incorporates content learning, structured interaction, peer facilitation, and self-reflection to support students as they explore issues of intergroup relations, conflict, and community.
