Starting in 2023, UNO became home to three AmeriCorps VISTAs who focus on increasing the social mobility of UNO at-promise students. AmeriCorps VISTAs at UNO work in UNO's Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center. This nationally recognized, one-of-a-kind facility focuses on connecting the campus to the Omaha community and beyond.

Volunteer and Community Impact Social Mobility Pathways Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTAStatus: Open. Apply by April 28, 2024 |
Position Overview We are looking for a volunteer and community impact Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA. The member will research and assess communities, non-profit organizations, campuses, and targeted student populations in areas like environment, social justice, healthcare, economics, and education. They will evaluate the community's needs in these areas, the nonprofit organizations serving these needs, and the poverty-related resources that are currently existing and missing in the community. They will categorize this data for future use in co-creating Signature Service Day volunteer projects and for encouraging greater representation in Volunteer and Civic Engagement Programs events and initiatives by first-generation and low-income students. |

Position Overview This Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA will work at the Service Learning Academy to develop and implement community-based learning and service learning courses at UNO. They will create assessments to measure the impact of these courses on student social mobility and job readiness. The VISTA will also collaborate with community partners to understand how student engagement affects their organizations. By analyzing this data, the VISTA will work with the team to improve communication, make changes to course offerings, and enhance support for engaged teaching and learning. |
Maverick Food Pantry Social Mobility Pathways Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTAStatus: Open. Apply by April 28, 2024 |
Position Overview The Maverick Food Pantry is the third unit seeking a Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA. This VISTA aims to enhance students' access to higher education and provide them with support throughout their academic journey. This project strives to achieve this goal by building capacity and implementing anti-poverty initiatives. The project includes initiatives such as establishing an advisory board for the University's social mobility work, providing basic needs training for the campus community, exploring funding sustainability, creating a Farmer's Market, nutrition program, parenting student support program, and developing a low-income college student simulation. |

Members can choose between a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,895) to pay for a range of education expenses or a $1,800 cash stipend. |

Benefits after AmeriCorps VISTA Service:
- UNO will offer up to 10 $1,000 scholarships for AmeriCorps alumni as a matching benefit when utilizing their Segal AmeriCorps Education award for undergraduate students.
- For graduate students, UNO will offer up to 10 $1,500 awards to AmeriCorps alumni as a matching benefit when utilizing their Segal AmeriCorps Education award. Graduate applicants must be admitted to a graduate degree or graduate certificate, self-identify as an AmeriCorps Alumni and upload evidence of AmeriCorps service. The graduate application fee will be waived for AmeriCorps Alumni who provide designated documentation at the time of application.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled as full-time students and graduate students must be enrolled for a minimum of six graduate credit hours to receive the one-time UNO award. In addition to the UNO scholarships, all AmeriCorps students will receive in-state tuition.
