Online at UNO offers undergraduate, graduate, and microcredential programs to help you reach your education goals and career ambitions while also fitting into your schedule.
Understanding the different types of course delivery modes available at UNO will be important as you're searching and registering for classes. The definitions below apply to the for-credit courses at UNO.
Course Delivery Modes & Section Numbers
All section numbers that begin with an “8” are considered distance education courses at UNO, but the way the courses are delivered and the expectations and requirements for students will differ across the delivery modes. Please read the definitions for each section type carefully. The Office of the University Registrar can also answer questions about the section numbers below.
Fully Remote (820 Sections)
Synchronous virtual class meetings at regularly scheduled times using academic technologies (e.g., Zoom).
Some course work may occur outside of scheduled class meetings using academic technologies.
You could be located anywhere but must be available at class times and should have a reliable learning space and Internet access to attend virtually.
Fully Online (850 Sections)
Completely asynchronous online instruction and learning using academic technologies (e.g., Canvas).
Course work, student-instructor interaction, and student-student interaction occur at flexible hours, but the course schedule is aligned to the university academic calendar (i.e., course is not “self-paced”).
You could be located anywhere and access course content and activities at any time with reliable Internet access.
Hybrid In-Person (860 Sections)
Mostly asynchronous online instruction mixed with reduced synchronous in-person class meetings at regularly scheduled times.
Class meetings usually occur on campus but can be held at off-campus locations when necessary (e.g., internships, field work, service learning, etc.). Asynchronous online instruction accounts for 75% or more of total instruction time. Synchronous in-person class meetings will not exceed 25% of what is traditionally scheduled in Fully In-Person sections.
You should be located close enough to Omaha to be able to attend a reduced number (usually 6-8) of class meetings on or near campus during the semester.
Hybrid Remote (870 Sections)
Mostly asynchronous online instruction mixed with reduced synchronous virtual class meetings at regularly scheduled times using academic technologies (e.g., Zoom).
Asynchronous online instruction accounts for 75% or more of total instruction time. Synchronous virtual class meetings will not exceed 25% of what is traditionally scheduled in Fully Remote sections.
You could be located anywhere but must be available at a reduced number (usually 6-8) of virtual class meetings and should have a reliable learning space and Internet access to attend during the semester.
Fully In-Person (001 Sections)
Traditional synchronous in-person class meetings at regularly scheduled times.
Class meetings usually occur on campus but can be held at off-campus locations when necessary (e.g., internships, field work, service learning, etc.). Some course work may occur outside of scheduled class meetings using academic technologies.
You should be located close enough in or near Omaha and can be physically present on campus or nearby sites.
Co-Scheduled Sections
Sometimes at UNO, a single course will be taught concurrently in more than one delivery mode. Most commonly this happens when an instructor simultaneously teaches a group of Fully In-Person (001) students in a campus classroom while a group of Fully Remote (820) students attend the class virtually via Zoom.
The sections are cross-listed in MavLink and clearly marked as “co-scheduled” courses so you know whether students will access the class in more than one mode. Students are expected to register for the section that corresponds with their intended mode of participation and attendance.
