Additional Information
Bio
Makayla is from Pella, IA, and is studying architectural engineering. Her non-profit experience includes partnering with Open Door Mission (ODM) and Omaha Street School (OSS). As a community action project for ODM, her team designed an appointment display board that will store and display appointment times and locations for clients. The display board will remind clients of important appointments, especially when travel time can make it an issue to arrive at those appointments on time. This project has been several years in the making and required a lot of technical support from group members with coding skills. In the second community action project for OSS, her team designed an activity-based empathy toolbox, the "Connection Avenue" boxes. Teachers will be provided with weekly boxes filled with three partner checkpoint activities/questions. There are also semester-long or year-long boxes that encourage more long-term empathy connection and development between students. Her leadership experience includes serving as president and past secretary of the Architectural Engineering Student Leadership and Advisory Committee. She is an active student affairs member of the Nebraska Engineering Student Council at Omaha. She is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the nation's oldest and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines, as well as the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. Makayla has had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy to learn about the history of architecture and its engineering applications. She has also been active in her church and community and has worked over 400 volunteer hours. Her internship experience includes working with MODUS Engineering in Des Moines, IA as an electrical & lighting intern. Her career interests include electrical engineering, specifically innovative, integrated lighting design.
