On-campus housing is more than just a place to rest your head. We encourage all residents to get involved on campus, particularly within the housing community. To facilitate this, our residence hall staff members host a variety of social and educational events and activities to complement your classroom learning. From game and craft nights to building competitions and block parties, each year our staff hosts over 500 events and activities for on-campus residents.
Benefits of Living On Campus
National research on this subject suggests that students who live on campus are more involved, hold higher GPAs, and gain more from their overall college experience. From our own research at UNO, we've found that there's a direct relationship between a student's involvement outside of the class from and their academic success. On average, data shows that students who attend more events and activities within Housing & Residence Life, have higher cumulative GPAs.
With these trends in mind, our staff seeks to promote learning through our programs and services and to help our residents advance in eight key areas identified by the Division of Student Affairs:
- Communication Skills
- Civic & Social Responsibility
- Critical & Creative Thinking
- Intercultural Competency
- Self-Awareness
- Interpersonal Skills
- Leadership
- Sustainability
How We Help
We utilize several strategies to engage residents in social and educational opportunities outside of the classroom in an effort to meet their co-curricular learning needs. These strategies include:
- Personal Connections
Our Resident Assistants (RAs) seek to build connections with each individual living on their floor or in their building. RAs serve as a great resource for our residents and can assist them in a variety of situations. These intentional interactions speak to the very foundation of our department's goal.
- Community Gatherings
Residents enjoy a vibrant campus life with many different opportunities to meet others, learn, and spend time outside of the classroom and their apartments. Staff and student leaders host a variety of floor, building, and village-wide events.
- Passive Programming
Recognizing a variety of learning styles, we seek to engage students through informal educational initiatives designed to enhance their learning and connections to our campus community. This includes bulletin boards, door decorations, and educational marketing campaigns.
- Partnerships Across Campus
We frequently invite those from other departments on campus to partner with us to deliver impactful and meaningful programs and services to our residents.
