Explain the main reason that you have for wanting to run for Student Government.
I genuinely care about our campus, which is why I engage myself with not only activities, but with other students and faculty. The well being of the people around me has always been a important to me, and it’s the main reason I am running for Student Government President. I’ve been able to hear a variety of different opinions and concerns about our university by forming friendships with the people around me, The most common, and alarming, one I’ve encountered is that many students feel as if they do not have a voice and their concerns do not matter. As an active student, I will continue to listen wholeheartedly to everyone, even if they feel like they aren’t being heard, so that someday every student can know their opinion does matter.
Provide an issue that you think should be changed or improved on campus.
The biggest issues I would like to focus on if I were to be elected are student outreach, feedback to the UNO community, and transparency. The most common, and alarming, comment I’ve encountered on campus is that many students feel as if they do not have a say in policy changes or had no idea a change was going into effect. Prior to a resolution passing, I would ensure that the students of UNO will have a chance to voice their opinions on the matter. I will do my best to improve the communication between students, their colleges’ senators, and myself. I will strive to improve the experience of the senators and students with the student government by broadening the number of students we’d reach out to and continuing to mobilize the senate to move forward with resolutions that will benefit as many people as possible. Our university is the most connected university to its city I have ever seen, so I think that relaying information about changes within the city of Omaha is just as important to students and faculty members as the changes happening within the university and state.
In light of current issues affecting our student body culturally and politically, I would do my best to be a persistent advocate for the Mavericks. By making myself as accessible as possible, consistently advocating for what the people I would represent believe in, and through the release of PR statements, I will accomplish these goals.What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
My optimistic attitude, determination, and overall drive is what sets me apart from other individuals and qualifies me to represent our student body. For any project I am asked to do or willingly start, I have done my absolute best, even without rest, to finish it properly. I am qualified to serve as Student Government President, because I have developed the necessary skills needed to serve this university effectively through similar student organizations. Those skills include understanding inclusion, valuing the opinions of others, respectfully adding my own input, and contributing to decision making on behalf of others. My experience with Student Government as Sergeant at Arms and a Senator has familiarized me with the governing documents the organization is founded upon: our constitution, by-laws, and Robert’s Rules of Order.
I have been involved on campus as the VP for SustainUNO, through the Cross Country/Track team, the Honors Student Association, and by actively engaging myself with political issues that directly and indirectly affect students. I have been able to overlap political issues with events I’ve organized on campus to help inform students about issues that will affect them. I am committed in what I believe in, and this is an important quality I can bring to the table to offer you, because I will be consistent in my vote to best represent the opinions and beliefs of the people I am representing, which is you.
