UNO swimmer, Breanna Brown, participates in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentoring program.
Mentorship
Since 2015, Breanna Brown has volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program. BBBS helps children realize their potential and build their futures by matching them with caring adult mentors. After being exposed to the BBBS program through her older sister, who also served as a mentor while in college, Breanna seized the opportunity to become a Big herself. As a Big, Breanna serves as an additional resource for her Little. Together, Breanna and her Little hang out two to three times a month. One of their favorite things to do is jump around at BounceU.
Breanna has enjoyed witnessing her relationship with her Little progress since starting as a mentor. She says that the mentoring experience has given her a different perspective about life. It has taught her new things about different cultures and broadened her horizons on what the Omaha community is all about. She has also been a positive role model for her roommate and mother who are now serving as big sisters themselves. Breanna says that the program is always in need of more volunteers and her advice to those considering volunteering is that "it is a great experience to see and learn new things, see a different part of the community and possibly help someone."
As an Exercise Science major, Breanna plans to attend physical therapy school. She also wants to continue serving as a Big Sister to other youth and hopes to maintain the strong relationship she has with her Little.
