Graduate Certificate in French

For those students interested in language teaching, these 18 credits could include six credits in language teaching pedagogy.

The graduate certificate in French presents a rigorous language program that seeks to serve these student populations:

• High school faculty interested in teaching dual enrollment classes who are required to have 18 graduate credit hours in their discipline to be eligible.
• Individuals in various fields (e.g., law enforcement, social work, psychological services, health care) who work with French-speaking individuals.

Admission Requirements

Application Deadline

Applications for this program are accepted on a rolling basis with a priority deadline of June 30 for fall admission, November 15 for spring admission, and April 15 for summer admission.

The UNO Graduate Studies Application can be found on the UNO Graduate Studies website. All materials must be submitted prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student has elected to begin coursework.

Program-Specific Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree with a 3.0 average or above (on a 4.0 scale).
2. International applicants must score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), 80 internet-based (iBT) TOEFL, 6.5 International English Language Testing System (IEL TS), 53 Pearson Language Tests (PTE), or 105 Duolingo.
3. Official transcript from all previous institutions (except UNO).
4. Two letters of recommendation.
5. Competence in French with at least an intermediate-high level (based on ACTFL guidelines) as assessed through an oral interview and through a statement of purpose written in French.
6. Two references.

FREN 8036 Advanced French Conversation

Elective courses

Five 3-credit graduate level courses in French (a variety of courses in literature, culture, and linguistics/language for the professions)

Students interested in French language teaching may replace up to two elective courses with the following courses:

• FLNG 8020 Seminar FL/TESOL Research Methods
• FLNG 8030 Seminar Second Language Acquisition Theory
• FLNG 8040 Seminar Assessment and Curriculum Design
• FLNG 8960 Seminar: Special Topics

Students are encouraged to take more than the minimum number of required courses and may not repeat any courses already taken at the undergraduate level unless the content has changed.
