Sommer is the managing Partner of Hancock & Dana PC, a CPA firm specializing in the accounting, tax and business consulting needs of family-owned and closely held businesses. He also servers the firm by assisting clients with succession and exit planning strategies, developing incentive compensation programs and advising clients in tax planning. Working on a succession plan for a client, Sommer acquired Parking Area Maintenance Inc., an asphalt installation and repair business.
Sommer graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a BSBA in accounting. After graduation in 1976, he joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company. Subsequently, he started his own CPA firm before merging practices with Hancock & Dana PC in 1993. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Nebraska Society of CPAs. He is a past member of the AICPA Management Consulting Services Executive Committee, past chairman of the AICPA Management Consulting Services Practice Standards and Administration Committee, and served on the editorial board of the AICPA Management Consultant Newsletter. Sommer currently serves on the UNO College of Business Administration accounting advisory board and has served and currently serves on various nonprofit boards and committees.
He has received numerous citations for his professional and civic commitments including the American Business Women’s Business Associate of the Year, Omaha Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, UNO Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Fraternity Alumni of the Year, Private Practice Associates Contributors Award and Roncalli Catholic High School Pope John XXIII Community Service Award.
