What is The CADRE Project?
The CADRE Project is a nationally recognized program designed for newly certified elementary or secondary teachers.
The project provides an opportunity for teachers to complete an accelerated master's program while receiving support from UNO faculty, veteran teachers, and other first-year teachers. The program centers around the exchange of knowledge and services between UNO and participating local school districts by placing fully licensed CADRE Teachers in classrooms throughout the participating districts.
The acronym Career Advancement and Development for Recruits and Experienced teachers truly epitomizes the heart of the project in that it offers multiple opportunities for both new and experienced teachers. Participants complete their first year of teaching and a specialized master’s degree while receiving support from University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) faculty, veteran teachers from participating school districts, and other first-year teachers.
This 14-month induction program runs from June – July and begins with a program orientation the May prior to starting. Students complete the Capstone as the Comprehensive Exit Exam.
The effectiveness of the CADRE Project is witnessed through the support structures and program outcomes for participants.
Support Structures
Associate Support
- Receive support from experienced teachers who provide mentoring, coaching, and guidance throughout the year. These veterans hold master's degrees and are selected to serve as CADRE Associates within the CADRE teachers' districts. CADRE teachers receive five hours of support per week from an associate who partners with them throughout the year.
Cohort Support
- Work with other first-year teachers from across the metropolitan area and from multiple districts.
Educational Support
- Engage in seminars and special projects specially designed for the cohort.
- Learn practical teaching techniques and strategies for immediate application.
Program Outcomes
Teacher Effectiveness
- CADRE teachers outperform other educators who have taught for the same amount of time by over 30%.
Teacher Leadership
- 62% of CADRE participants go on to pursue leadership positions.
Retention
- 95% of CADRE participants remain in the field of education for more than 17 years.
Employment Support
- Districts participating in CADRE prioritize CADRE teachers.
Stipend
CADRE teachers are paid through a fellowship and receive a stipend of $20,000 in addition to a fully paid master’s degree program (tuition and fees). The offset in cost is made up within the first few years of teaching as CADRE teachers begin their careers at a higher pay level because of the master’s degree.
* Teachers are responsible for their own health insurance, application fees, and the cost of books.
