The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice will host their annual Jailhouse Scramble on Friday, Sept. 14, at Tiburon Golf Course located in Gretna, Nebraska. The Jailhouse Scramble, now in its 23rd year, allows golfers of all skill levels to come together to raise scholarship dollars and have fun in the process. Proceeds raised through the golf scramble support scholarships for both graduate and undergraduate students studying in the School.
Since the Jailhouse Scramble was founded in 1995, hundreds of golfers have picked up their clubs and participated in the four-person scramble. While the location for the event has changed throughout its history, the goal of making college more affordable for students majoring in criminology and criminal justice keeps the golfers coming back year after year.
“Thanks to the Jailhouse Scramble we are able to provide three to five scholarships each year to deserving undergraduates in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice,” said Samantha Clinkinbeard, Ph.D, undergraduate program coordinator. “These scholarships help students pay for books and tuition, and allows them to work fewer hours so that they can participate in valuable internships that can help lead them toward their chosen career. All of the funded students aspire toward a career that will allow them to give back to their communities someday.”
“It really is a fun event with a great purpose,” said Gaylene Armstrong, Ph.D., director of the School. "Plus the networking opportunities are priceless. The Jailhouse Scramble is supported by so many people working in all areas of criminology and criminal justice, from corrections to policing. Our alumni love seeing their former classmates and professors as well as spend the day with criminal justice professionals working in a variety of career fields."
The Jailhouse Scramble is open to any golfer, duffer to professional, who wants to support the UNO/UNL Criminal Justice Education Fund. All are welcome. The cost is $100 per person, which includes green fees, golf cart, lunch, and dinner. Check-in is at 10 A.M. with a shotgun start at 11 A.M. You can sign up your own foursome or sign up by yourself and get paired with other players. A dinner-only option for non-golfers is available at a cost of $25 per person. Dinner will be served at approximately 3:30 P.M.
